JD Newbury is one of the most exciting Texas Artists on the circuit today. He is the direct nephew of the legendary “Mickey” Newbury of American Trilogy fame. He is not only a gifted songwriter and entertainer but he is also known for his “high energy” stage show and touring band “Southwind.” His new album entitled: “Influences” has produced a single (Beer Makes You Lean) which climbed all the way to #17 on the Texas Indie charts.
JD Newbury’s earliest musical influence would come from watching his world famous “Uncle Mickey” Newbury. JD would sit mesmerized watching his uncle on TV performing such classic hits as; American Trilogy and “Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in!”
As the years went by his next influence came through a stack of vinyl that he listened to over and over. He would listen to such greats as Kris Kristofferson, Dean Dillon and of course his famous family member Mickey Newbury. Beginning his music career as a drummer he quickly discovered that music was “in his DNA!” Being encouraged by the success of his uncle Mickey he began to take his own life experiences and turn them into songs. JD later joined the highly publicized songwriting group: “Write Around Texas” where his writing and vocal skills quickly began to be noticed by music executives and agents alike.
“Beer Makes You Lean” was JD’s debut single. In the spring of 2010, the song became an immediate success, reaching the Top Ten on both the Texas Regional Radio Chart and Texas Music Chart. Now JD Newbury and Southwind Band travel through Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana playing in dance halls, festivals, and honkytonks. JD’s performance is engaging, electric and filled with “life stories” around the songs that he performs.
